1. Check out today's Sports Section. This is a good way to spend some time familiarizing yourself with this section. Find the name of a local sports writer, a sports column or editorial, and interesting sports verb or adjective, A synonym for won or lost, a sports result from another country, a close score, the name of a winner and loser, a sport of little interest, a sports hero, a reference to a rule in sports.
2. Using more of the Sports Section, identify as many examples as you can of team nicknames, mascots, emblems, symbols and logos. You may want to use, in addition, retail ads from other sections of your Journal. Clip and paste them on a piece of paper.
3. Using the Journal's Comic Strips, select at least ten characters who you would like to nominate for a comic strip Hall of Fame. On a piece of paper write the comic strip character's name, a brief description and the reason why you are "nominating" this character for such an honor.
4. Read the comic strips in your Journal to determine, if possible, the career or job of several of the characters. On a piece of paper write down the character's name and their occupation. Select one of the characters and write a brief job description of that character on your paper. Try to include an estimate of the character's salary, education, experience and job potential (is there any future in this line of work?) Example: Popeye---Sailor. Present this list to your class.
