In 1944, after two months of saturation bombing (the heaviest to precede an attack thus far in the Pacific), the 23rd and 24th Marine Regiments attacked the Marshall Islands. In four days Kwajalein was taken, providing the Allies with a major staging area. The dead numbered 8,122 Japanese and 356 Americans.
