Queen of the New Mexico spelling Bee is 10-year-old Ariel Kokoricha who spelled “legato” in the 14th Round. She is from Clovis in Curry County and attends Clovis Christian School. Ariel will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 29-30 in Washington, D.C. CONGRATULATIONS, Ariel!!!!!
Second place was Anish Kumar from Santa Fe and Ben Voter, also of Santa Fe, placed third. Benjamin Jacquez of Farmington came in 4th and Katie Delgado of Los Alamos placed fifth. Super job!
The spelling bee is open to students who have neither reached their 15th birthday on or before August 1, 2013 nor passed 8th grade, and who attend schools that are officially enrolled with the Scripps National Spelling Bee by October 2013 enrollment deadline. Students from second to eighth grade are eligible. Students must have completed the first grade and be 8 years old or older. Students who are previous winners of the NM Spelling Bee may participate in the 2014 Bee.
Students in the Rio Rancho Schools District, Albuquerque Public Schools, Albuquerque Charter Schools, Albuquerque Parochial and Private Schools, and Albuquerqe Home Schools have separate bees and these take the place of county bees. Winners advance directly to the NM Spelling Bee on March 23, 2013.
Each county may send one speller for every 10 or portion of 10 schools enrolled with the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The deadline for the champions to register with the New Mexico Spelling Bee is Feb. 1, 2014.
Registration forms will be sent to county coordinators via email.
The New Mexico Spelling Bee is scheduled for 9 am March 22, 2013 at Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque, 532 Osuna Road NE. Schools must register with the Scripps National Spelling Bee before October 15, 2012
. The fee is $. Spellers from schools not enrolled with the national bee are not eligible to participate in the New Mexico and national spelling bees. After the October deadline, a fee of $ will be charged to register late. Late registration will be taken up to December 14, 2012.
The deadline for counties, APS and Rio Rancho School Districts to submit the names of their winners to the NM bee is Feb. 1, 2014. Good luck!
